Summer Associate Program

The Moran Reeves Conn summer associate program is an upbeat and integral part of our firm. Consisting of ten carefully planned weeks, the program is designed to give rising third-year law students exposure to the many facets of our firm, including our people, practices, and values.

In-person participation at our office in Richmond’s historic Shockoe Slip is preferred, although a hybrid arrangement is available for those who prefer some remote assignments. Summer associates learn about the firm’s priorities, namely our dedication to clients, emphasis on community service, and inclusive culture.

Clients

Summer associates become part of our work process. Each is assigned both an associate-level mentor and a partner-level mentor to advise throughout the period. Projects are tailored to individual interests, although we encourage associates to become familiar with both our defense and transactional practices.

The complexity of assignments is typical of that done by first-year associates, thereby providing a hands-on simulation of work life after law school. For example, associates help move cases forward by drafting pleadings and transactional documents, attending depositions and mediations, and participating in client meetings. Our valued clients are most important to our firm, and summer associates typically interact directly with them.

Community

Community service is a founding value of Moran Reeves Conn. As such, philanthropic endeavors are part of our program and each summer we select a primary charity to support.

Culture

The partners of Moran Reeves Conn have built a positive, inclusive work environment, one which has earned the firm the accolade of Virginia Business Best Places to Work in recent years. We “have each other’s backs” at work, and we like to have fun together both in and out of the office. This fun includes the informal social events that are part of our summer program. These socials include outdoor adventures, historic tours, and food tasting in our beautiful capital city, as well as private gatherings at local venues and the homes of our attorneys.

The summer program at MRC gave me a chance to work on a variety of projects across practice areas and really sharpen my legal skills. What made the summer program truly special, however, was the environment. Even during a summer hampered by COVID, spending time at a firm where people enjoy working with one another made all the difference.

From day one, I was welcomed as a colleague and entrusted with real assignments. Whether it was volunteering at the historic Evergreen Cemetery, taking a Segway tour of Richmond, or working on a complex motion to dismiss, the atmosphere was always positive and enthusiastic. MRC offers a high-quality law firm experience without pretentiousness, and as a summer associate, it was exactly what I was looking for.
